Mammalian retina is a relatively simple and experimentally more accessible part of the brain. Retina is an excellent model to study how a network of neurons processes information. One of our goals is to understand how retinal circuits extract information from the visual scene, and encode it for transmission to higher visual areas of the brain.
This transmission of visual information to brain is disrupted in several neurodegenerative diseases of retina, such as Retinitis Pigmentosa and Age-Related Macular Degeneration, leading to blindness. We study how novel therapeutic approaches, such as retinal prostheses and stem cells could restore vision in animal models.
